The Prospect Heights Park District utilizes the Thor Guard Lightning Prediction system at Lions Park (which includes the recreation center & swimming pool) and Old Orchard Country Club golf course.
What is Thor Guard? It’s a computerized system that helps alert patrons to hazardous weather conditions.
How does it work? It predicts the probability of a lightning strike within 8-20 minutes before it will strike. Thor Guard sensors measure and analyze the electrostatic field in the atmosphere.
Where is it? Rooftop units are located on the Gary Morava Recreation Center and the Old Orchard Country Club building.
How will patrons be alerted? The system will emit a 15-second warning blast and the strobe lights on the roofs of the Gary Morava Recreation Center and the Old Orchard Country Club building will illuminate if there is danger of a potential strike. This is a warning to clear the area immediately and find appropriate shelter. Once the lightning threat passes, three 5-second horn blasts will indicate an “all clear,” the strobe lights will turn off and normal activity may resume.
Is it accurate? The system is 97% accurate within a 2-mile radius.
Emergency Tips
- Patrons should seek shelter inside their vehicles or within a lightning protected building.
- Patrons should avoid trees, picnic shelters, fences, bicycles, or any other metal objects.
- Patrons should stay out of and away from water, including pools and showers.
- Patrons should avoid using electrical appliances including telephones.
- If you should feel your hair is or is about to stand on end, drop to your knees and place your hands on your knees. Do not lie flat on the ground.
Please note that individuals must use their own best judgment in inclement weather conditions, and not rely solely on the Thor Guard Lightning Prediction system for their personal safety. Individuals not obeying the warning signal do so at their own risk.
